SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
The University of Nevada Press is a public service division of the Nevada System of Higher Education. Its mission is to make a contribution to the State of Nevada, as well as to the national and international scholarly communities, by publishing books in the humanities, sciences, and social sciences that deal with the history, literature, natural history and resources, environment, economy, politics, anthropology, ethnic groups and cultures of Nevada and the West; the Basque people of Europe and the Americas; Native Americans; gambling and commercial gaming; and contemporary affairs. The Press also publishes original fiction and creative nonfiction and books on regional topics for a general audience.
Initial Review
If you are interested in submitting your work to the University of Nevada Press, we ask that you send us first a manuscript proposal, which should consist of: a table of contents; a summary or chapter outline of the manuscript; information about its length, number and type of illustrations (if any are planned), and any special components, such as footnotes, bibliography, appendixes, tables, glossaries, etc.; information about the book’s intended audience and any competing works already in publication; and a representative sample section of the text, consisting of a chapter or two. A brief vita or resume of the author should accompany this material. We do not accept email submissions.
Proposals should be sent to the appropriate editor at:
University of Nevada Press
Morrill Hall Mail Stop 0166
Reno NV 89557-0166
Joanne O’Hare, Director: literature, creative nonfiction, regional topics
Charlotte Dihoff, Acquisitions Editor: history, social sciences, and sciences
Margaret Dalrymple, Acquisitions Editor: fiction, natural history
If you are uncertain which editor to contact, please send your proposal to Joanne O’Hare, Director, who will convey it to the appropriate editor. Once we have reviewed the proposal, we shall, if the project seems suited for our publishing program, invite you to submit the entire manuscript for formal consideration.
If you wish to have the proposal returned after our review, we ask that you include a stamped, self-addressed envelope with the proposal packet.
Formal Review
If you are invited to submit a full manuscript for our consideration, please send two clean paper copies of the entire manuscript, including all notes, bibliography, appendixes, and any other components. If the book is to include illustrations, please send only photocopies at this time and retain the originals in a safe place.
If the manuscript exists on an electronic disk, please make sure you keep the disk in a safe place. We do not need access to the disk during the review process. Because manuscripts under review spend so much time in the mail, the Press cannot assume responsibility for loss or damage.
We ask that you use white, 8 1/2 by 11 inch paper, printed on one side only. Do not bind the manuscript or enclose it in a binder. Double-space everything (all text, quotations, footnotes, bibliography, figure captions, tables, lists, appendices, etc.). Leave a one-inch margin on all sides of the page. Align margins left, with a ragged right edge (DO NOT justify margins). Number the pages consecutively from the beginning to the end of the manuscript. Long quotations (10 lines or more) should be indented an extra 5 spaces. Use paragraph indents if the quotations were indented in the original. Notes should be placed at the end of the manuscript (not at the bottoms of the pages or ends of the chapters).
Photographs, figures, charts, graphs, tables, and any other complementary materials, should be on separate pages, not on pages with text.
If your manuscript contains illustrations or large amounts of quoted or reprinted material (as in an anthology), you will be responsible, if the Press makes a publishing commitment, for obtaining all necessary permissions to reprint and for paying any usage fees.
Authors of novels or short fiction should include information about any previous publication of this material, including date of first publication and titles of venue.
If the Press makes a publishing offer, you are required to provide two paper copies of the final draft of the manuscript (which incorporates all revisions recommended by the Press’s editors and outside readers) and a disk containing the manuscript formatted to the Press’s specifications (see Electronic Preparation Guidelines).
A helpful reference book, The Chicago Manual of Style, is available at most libraries and book stores.
Manuscript Evaluation Process
The review process consists of several stages. Manuscripts are read first by the in-house editor. If they appear suited for our publishing program, they are evaluated by readers from outside the house who are recognized authorities in the subject matter of the manuscript or, in the case of a literary work, by distinguished critics or writers in the genre of the manuscript (usually both). After two favorable outside evaluations, the manuscript is presented to the Press’s Editorial Board, which consists of eight representatives from the campuses of the Nevada System of Higher Education and the Desert Research Institute, and which controls the Press’s imprint. Only after Board approval is the Press able to make a publishing commitment.
Publication takes place after negotiation and acceptance of a formal contract between the Press and the author or his/her agent. In most cases, the author receives a royalty on book sales, the amount of which is negotiated at the time the contract is offered.
